BREAKING NEWSTRANSLATE
As Dangote goes so does the Nigerian economy
ON JANUARY 21, 20196:41 AMIN NEWS, SOBOWALE ON BUSINESSCOMMENTS

“What is good for General Motors is good for America.”
By Dele Sobowale

FOR almost twenty years General Motors, GM, was the largest company, not only in America, but in the entire world. GM sat on top of the Fortune 500 companies for so long during which there was “no vacancy” at the top. All the other contestants were vying only for second place. Today GM is no longer the company presidents fear to offend. Others have taken the coveted top spot.

Nigeria Economy
Political standoffs will not affect policy continuity in Nigeria – Larbie
Nigeria also had its own “GM” for decades. It was called the United African Company, UAC. Until the early 2000s, UAC was the leader of the Nigerian Organised Private Sector, OPS. Its shares quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, constituted about 30 per cent of the value of the stock market. At the peak of its prowess, UAC had up to 40 Divisions; some with several branches. No government, military or civilian would contemplate an economic policy measure without consulting the Chairman/Managing Director of the UAC – before the Buhari regime in 1984-5.
Buhari altered the relationship between the leadership of the OPS and the Federal Government. Nigeria is still paying for that drastic mistake till today. More pages are needed to explain how that delicate balance of powers prevented economic disasters before 1984-5 than is available now. It is merely sufficient to point out that a year after the Buhari/Idiagbon regime sidelined the OPS and UAC, thereafter the country went into its first recession since independence in 1960.
For every folly of their princes, the Greeks feel the lash—Horace, 65-8 BC.
And for every folly of their governments – federal state or local government – Nigerians are feeling the whip. And, the end to suffering is not in sight. Certainly not in 2019 which is already a disaster before the first month ends. Two prominent Nigerian chief executive officers, CEOs, of UAC during the period under review were Chief Abebe, the first Nigerian CEO and Chief Ernest Shonekan, GCFR. While the Head of State, civilian or military ruled the polity; they virtually ruled the economy.
To some extent, it could be said then that “what was good for UAC was good for Nigeria.” At the very least, it was the largest private employer of labour – directly or indirectly. That today UAC is no longer the largest company in Nigeria, either in terms of turnover or jobs was mainly brought about by Federal Government policy measures which transferred the vast majority of UAC’s businesses depending on imports to local businessmen – usually party members or those close to the corridors of power. Whereas UAC, as a company with reputation to protect would import television sets and other appliances and pay correct duties, smugglers were allowed to bring in the same items, bribe Customs staff and openly display and sell their imports at a cheaper price. The first UAC Division to feel the lash was Kingsway Stores – the first supermarket in Nigeria. Successive FGs made sure that Kingsway was liquidated. Its first store at Marina reminds those old enough of when Nigeria had a government in the real sense of the word.
Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it—George Santayana, 1863-1952.
Moving fast forward one can observe that history is about to repeat itself. In the last ten years or so, the Dangote Group of Companies, DGC, had become the largest group on the NSE. For years, they moved the stock exchange forward – just as UAC did in its heydays. They made money and the investors in DGC were happy to be on board. In the process, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, perhaps the most patriotic Nigerian alive, rose to become one of the top 25 richest people on earth and the richest African. To be honest, I was proud of him. There are very few positive measures of success known to man in which an African, and a Nigerian for that matter, ranks top 25. It was an achievement worthy of national celebration. To me the national honours given him was not enough. He had done more for Nigeria than all our post-Independence national leaders – except one. But, there was always that fear that another FG might do to DGC what was done to UAC; that those who once invested heavily in DGC would not suffer the same fate as those who slaved to make UAC great.
Unfortunately, that is precisely what might be happening now. The latest Forbes list of the world’s richest people was heart-breaking. Dangote is now down to 100 richest and he has lost money – virtually all of it here in Nigeria. To non-economists, it might appear as if this is crying more than the bereaved. That is understandable. What they fail to realise is that Dangote, Adenuga, Otedola etc listed among the world’s richest invariably attract Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, to Nigeria which the rest of us cannot. And, the richer they are, the more foreign investors want to discuss investment opportunities in Nigeria with them. Certainly, nobody needs to be told that a nation which acquires the reputation of making its business people poorer will find it extremely difficult to convince most foreigners to invest in its economy.
The economist …must concern himself with the ultimate aims of man —Alfred Marshall, 1842-1924.
Those consumed by envy might not understand why a “thousandnaire” would worry about the problems of a dollar billionaire. That is where professional economists differ from our Fellow Countrymen. The injunction from one of the founding fathers of our profession was not for us to concern ourselves with our own economic aims and objectives. It did not even enjoin us to strive to be rich. Instead, it was an admonition to economists to take care of the greatest number of their fellow citizens. That means drawing attention to those events which might have long term negative repercussions for the nation.
To be quite candid, Dangote represents only a pervasive problem with the Nigerian economy. There are several hundred others caught in the vice-grip of uncertainty regarding when the Nigerian economy will again grow at six to seven per cent a year. This year is out of the question. The 2019 Budget delivered two days before December recess by the National Assembly, NASS, and in the middle of campaigns, will not be signed until at least May this year. The appropriations are less than the 2018 budget which will result in, at best, two per cent growth. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, IMF and other global organisations predict 2.2 per cent for 2019. With population increase still racing at about three per cent, Nigeria will add about five million to its poor population. Per capita income will drop a bit more and so will purchasing power.
Dangote and other patriotic Nigerian entrepreneurs have done their duty by Nigeria. They have sown joyfully; but they are almost harvesting in tears. If they stop, everyone in Nigeria will be in real trouble – not just people in Borno, Katsina and Zamfara States. The most important question now is: For how long must misguided government economic policies ruin our nation while we do nothing?
This year like others has only twelve months. At least five will be spent with nobody thinking about how to prevent more deterioration. The remaining seven months cannot possibly reverse the accumulated damage – unless a new and radical solution is found.

INVESTMENT CRITERIA
We invest in small and growing businesses that have the ability to scale up and be sustainable as well as create positive impact in the communities in which they operate.
We consider applications for funding from businesses which fulfil our investment criteria as below:
Geography: We finance and support businesses that operate in countries where GroFin has an operational office namely in South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Egypt, Oman, Iraq, and Jordan, to enable us to offer regular value-adding business support. Applications from businesses that operate in other countries cannot be considered.
Sectors of focus: The business operates in one of the investment focus sectors of Education, Healthcare, Agri-processing, Manufacturing, Energy, Water/Sanitation and labour-intensive businesses. Other sectors can be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Business Profile: We typically invest in businesses with these maturity profiles:
Early stage (1-3 years)
Start-ups are considered when they are backed by an entrepreneur with significant experience, track record and material financial commitment to the venture.
Early maturity (3-6 years)
Mature (>6 years)
GroFin considers businesses in all sectors with exception of those activities that have significant potential negative social and environmental impacts. We also do not invest in financial intermediation businesses or non profits such as NGOs, and community groups. Primary agriculture is only considered if it takes place in a controlled environment and at scale.
Investment Size: We invest between US$ 100K – US$ 1.5 M in the business, preferably as self-liquidating debt.
Duration of finance: Typically, 3-8 years. Loan repayment term must be aligned with the purpose of the loan.
Entrepreneur Profile: The entrepreneur should have significant own investment in the business, have the ability to manage a business – from operations, sales, financial management, administration, and leadership. They must be willing to work with us as a value adding financier and share management information regularly. They must have growth ambition and demonstrate integrity as well as professionalism in their dealings.
Collateral requirements: Though GroFin has no minimum requirement, we do expect entrepreneurs to (partly) secure the loan if collateral is available. Quality and value of collateral does play an important part in the overall risk assessment. Personal guarantees of the entrepreneur(s) is required.
Social Impact: The business must be able to have a measurable impact in terms of the number of jobs supported and sustained, female ownership, female employment and semi-/unskilled labour. SMEs that provide indirect job opportunities (e.g. training, skills development) and/or environmental services (water, waste, energy, ecotourism) are also attractive to GroFin.
Business support: GroFin delivers business support to clients prior to the investment and during the tenor of the loan – focusing on improving business viability, sustainability and growth through identifying material business risks/opportunities across a range of generic areas as identified during the screening/due diligence stage. For this reason, entrepreneurs need to be receptive to receiving advice and implementing recommendations, normally around improving formalisation of their business.

Determined to make its digital banking application fast, convenient and hassle-free, Access Bank Plc has refreshed the revolutionary lifestyle solution, PayWithCapture to a more illimitable version.
The latest version, PayWithCapture 5.0 comes with additional features that enable customers to transfer funds from any bank account (one or more) to any bank account or phone number and email addresses.
PayWithCapture 5.0 has also expanded to the web for users to experience the many benefits on larger screens. It also offers a USSD service *901# that allows users to carry out most of the listed functions without the need to access the internet.
PayWithCapture5.0 users can still enjoy the success of QR code scanning for payments but with the added ability to make transfers to bank accounts, phone numbers and email addresses.
Users can also set up a savings club through PayWithCapture. Savings Clubs, commonly known as Ajo or Esusu enable them save jointly with friends towards a common goal as the funds can be pooled and rotated among all members of the group or pooled and given to one person.
The Head of Digital Banking at Access Bank, AdelekeAdekoya explains,
“We heard about the issues and complaints our customers had on the old app. With this new version, we’ve tried to resolve them all” According to him, the latest version has extended beyond simply scanning QR-Codes to pay for transactions to allowing customers experience banking in a way that feels as personal as they want it to be.
Another key feature of the upgrade, according to Adekoya is the introduction of the PayWithCapture Titanium Card.
“Simply request for the card on PayWithCapture, then transfer funds from payment methods linked to your account and you can use your PayWithCapture debit card anywhere around the world you see the MasterCard sign,” he added.

Aliko Dangote’s wife
The first question, which many Nigerians ask is if Aliko Dangote is still a bachelor. The rich man was married twice as well twice divorced, so now the person, who converts cement into gold, is officially single.
The first times he was married being a twenty years old young man, his parents have chosen a wife for him. Some time later, he fell in love with a friend of his daughters Nafisat Yar’auda (daughter of Umaru Musa Yar’auda) but the girl said “no” to the marriage proposal.
Later, he married Maria AD Muhammad Rufai. This marriage didn’t last long and as it hit the rocks and ended in divorce. After the second divorce, there were rumors about a romance between the richest man in Africa and the Beauty Queen of 2013 Sylvia Nduka. There was even information that these two were married secretly. People, who were subscribed to Sylvia’s Instagram proved the information that she added in Instagram two letters AD after the name, which stands for Aliko Dangote. There was no happy ending in this love story too.
Aliko Dangote’s children
The African mogul has three grown-up daughters. Despite father’s wealth, these girls are very modest and are not arrogant at all: you cannot see them with uncovered heads. They are gorgeous young ladies who studied a lot and graduated from the best universities in the Unlighted Kingdom. There is no much information about them, they are not eager to introduce their private lives to public. Tthe facts, we know for sure are Aliko Dangote’s daughters’ names:
01. Halima Bello (Dangote)
02. Mariya Dangote
03. Fatima Dangote
Aliko Dangote and daughters
Halima (the oldest daughter) studied marketing in London. She is a married woman now. Together with husband Sulaiman Sani Bello they gave birth to two beautiful granddaughters of Aliko Dangote. Now she works in a family business. Mariya Dangote graduated the Coventry University and now as the elder sister also works with their father.
Fatima Dangote also has graduated and now is the head at the Cupcake factory.
Aliko Dangote and daughter
The rich businessman also has a son, however, Aliko Dangote’s son has another surname, his name is Abdulrahman Fasasi. He is not Dangote’s son for blood, he was adopted.
Aliko Dangote for sure can be proud of his children.
Aliko Dangote’s family
As you have noticed, Aliko Dangote is a public person, he invited journalists to his stunning multimillion mansion but he tries to keep private life behind seven locks. There is no official information that he is married now as well as it is a secret whether his heart is free or not. Probably, soon we will hear about the third official wife of Aliko Dangote, who knows. You can be sure that Legit.ng will provide you the update on this issue as soon as there are news.

Damgote formulary innitiatives on Nigerian roads
FG kicks off road for tax refund projects
by Nduka Chiejina, Assistant Editor February 19, 2019
FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestLinkedInWhatsAppEmail
The Federal Government has flagged-off its roads for tax-refund initiative with Dangote Construction handling a 16-kilometre Ofeme Community road network in Ohuhu in Umuahia North local Government, Abia State.
The community road project which is expected to be delivered under the FG’s Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme enables private sector like Dangote, Unilever, NLBG and others to invest in road construction, making it possible to upgrade access roads to industrial and manufacturing clusters and reduce cost of transportation which results into reduction in the cost of food and other services, thereby curbing inflation.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Ofeme Abia state, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelemah, called on the people to give the contractor the needed cooperation to enable it complete the road project in record time of one year stated in the contractual agreement.
Also speaking, the Federal Controller of Works, Abia State, Engr. Nwankwo Chuwudike, who represented the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Raji Fashola, said “the road would not only enhance the standard of living of the Ofeme community, it would also lead to reduction in the cost of transportation and ultimately help in poverty reduction.”
He called on the people of Ofeme to own the project while also “appealing to all road users, and the youths of this community to be supportive, patient and mindful of road diversions during construction, while we hold the contractors to their bond of timely and quality delivery of this service.”
Federal Government recently resolved to continue with massive infrastructural development across the country under Executive Order #007 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari in January. Six private sector players will execute 19 road projects under the Executive Order 7. They are Dangote Industries Limited; Lafarge Africa Plc; Unilever Nigeria Plc; Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc; Nigeria LNG Limited; and China Road and Bridge Corporation Nigeria Limited.
These Investors will be investing in 19 Eligible Road Pilot scheme projects, totalling 794.4km which have been prioritised in 11 States across each of the 6 Geo-Political Zones.
The Minister of Finance Mrs Zainab Ahmed who chairs the Scheme’s management committee said that “Executive Order #007 of 2019 on the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme will incentivise private sector investment in Nigerian roads across key economic corridors and industrial clusters, relieving the Government of the burden of funding the initial outlays for these investments.”

Onnoghen: Even Dangote can’t forget $1m in his bank account, says El-Rufai
Published
February 1, 2019
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has faulted the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, for saying that he forgot to declare the millions of dollars traced to his domiciliary accounts.
Contending that the acclaimed Richest Man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, would never forget a million dollars in any bank account, El-Rufai on Friday advised Onnoghen to resign as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.
He gave the advice when members of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in the state took their protest to the Government House in Kaduna.
El-Rufai, who received the protesters’ solidarity letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on the suspension of the CJN, said with just over 20 years in public service, Justice Onnoghen possibly has more money than Aliko Dangote, the richest African.
According to him, the suspension of Onnoghen was in order, saying that even Dangote cannot forget one million dollars in his bank account.
“The case of Justice Onnoghen is the case in which somebody who has worked in government for past 20 years suddenly has millions of dollars in his account.
“He has admitted, but says he has forgotten about them.
“I want to express happiness to all of you for coming together to convey this very clear statement from the people of Kaduna State that in Kaduna, we do not support corruption; in Kaduna; we do not support injustice; in Kaduna State, we are 100 per cent behind the integrity of our President.
“I can assure you that the message you have given to me will be delivered to the President today.
“The case with Justice Onnoghen is a very sad one. Othman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, wrote that the worst form of corruption you can find in any public service is judicial corruption.
“This is because when the president is corrupt or the governor is corrupt, it is to the judge that ordinary people can take their case to.
‘When the judge himself is corrupt, it is the highest form of corruption and must never be condoned.

Saraki contributed more than Tinubu, Amaechi to make Buhari President – Okupe
“The President did the right thing by asking him to step aside pending investigation. It is the proper thing to do. It is what is done in every organised and civilised society.
“Unfortunately, some people in Nigeria are trying to make white black and black white. They are using technicalities to delay bringing this man to Justice.
“Mr. President did not remove Onnoghen from office. He said in honour of the Judiciary, he should step aside so that the charges against him can be investigated and prosecuted.
“But the man is shameless; he does not want to go; but it is time for Nigerians to come all out and tell him he must go. Our judiciary must be clean. Our judiciary must consist of judges who cannot be bought,” the governor said.
Leaders of the civil society organisations, Messrs Zubairu Muktar and Abubakar Abubakar, said all well-meaning and focused Nigerians interested in the progress of the country must continue to support the anti-corruption war of the Buhari administration.
“As a coalition of more than 150 CSOs, we wish to convey to our President that we will continue to stand firm, straight and tall with him as he continues to purge out corruption embedded in the Nigerian system which has become a hindrance to the economic, political and social development of our dear nation,’’ Muktar said.
On his part, Abubakar said: “We commend President Buhari for his continuous pledge of free, fair and credible elections. We wish him good health, wisdom and long life to re-engineer the country towards an enviable direction.”

APC, PDP defy INEC, vow to continue campaigns
Published
February 18, 2019
Political parties participating in the 2019 general elections have said they will not obey the directive of the Independent National Electoral Commission that they should stop campaigns after the postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday morning.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had on Saturday while giving reasons for the postponement of the elections, said campaigns had ended on Thursday.
But the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Coalition of United Political Parties, on Sunday said they would never obey the order, saying that they would continue their campaigns.
We will continue our campaigns – APC, PDP
A report by the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, monitored in Kano, on Sunday, quoted the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole and a Director in the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as saying the electoral laws allowed for campaigns to go on until 24 hours before polls.
Kwankwaso said, “Nobody asked that the elections should be delayed. So, since the elections have been postponed, they (INEC) should allow everybody to campaign.
“Everybody knows that what the electoral law says is that campaigns can continue until 24 hours to the elections so, since the elections have been postponed by one week, political parties should continue with their campaigns.”
Kwankwaso, who said he was certain nobody was happy with INEC’s decision to postpone the elections, prayed that such would not repeat itself on Saturday.
To give fillip to its position, the PDP on Sunday said it took the decision to re-open its campaigns after due consideration of the provision of the Electoral Act.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement, said the PDP rejected what he called the wrongful administrative prohibition of open campaigns by INEC.
READ ALSO: PDP claims APC elements in INEC sabotaged electoral process
He said, “Our position is predicated on the clear provision of Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act, which stipulated that “for the purposes of this Act, the period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day.
“The clear import of this provision, in the current situation, is that given the postponement of the elections to February 23, the 24 hours requirement for closure of all public campaigns falls on the midnight of February 21.”
The BBC reported that Oshiomhole said the electoral law allowed for campaigns until 24 hours before the commencement of polls.
He said, “INEC cannot go contrary to what the law says. Everyone knows that campaigns can only be suspended 24 hours to an election, I will continue with campaigns on Sunday (yesterday) because if we don’t campaign, people will not come out and vote.
“We will tell the people what happened has happened. Let them come out and vote for the President (Muhammadu Buhari). For one week, if we don’t talk, people will forget; we will campaign.”
CUPP asks opposition parties to resume campaigns for Atiku
On its part, the CUPP asked its members to shun INEC’s directive and resume campaigns ahead of the Saturday’s elections.
CUPP, in a statement by its national spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, also said Yakubu’s position was unconstitutional.
He argued that since the presidential election had been moved to Saturday, political parties were at liberty to resume campaigns till midnight on Thursday.
Ugochinyere, therefore, asked members of CUPP to resume campaigns from Sunday (yesterday) and mobilise voters for the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
We will take final position on electioneering today – INEC
But reacting to the parties’ defiance to the commission’s order, INEC said it would take a final decision on whether or not political parties could resume campaigns for the elections on Monday (today).
The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, who disclosed this in an interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday, said the meeting of the commission’s management would determine whether the electoral body would shift its ground on its earlier decision on campaigns or not.
Oyekanmi in the interview with The PUNCH said, “On the issue of campaigns, the commission will meet tomorrow (Monday) and take a decision on the matter. On the issue of Zamfara State APC candidates appearing on the ballot papers, I have no comments on that at the moment.”
Falana faults INEC on campaign ban
However, a Lagos-based lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), called for the unbundling of INEC. This, he said, would have averted the last-minute postponement of the elections originally scheduled to hold last Saturday.

Falana, in a statement he issued in the aftermath of the rescheduling of the polls, also criticised INEC’s decision to stop campaigns by parties.
He said political parties were by Section 99 of the Electoral Act allowed to campaign up till 24 hours to the new date of elections.
According to him, with the delay of the elections by one week, political parties’ campaign period had changed and would only end 24 hours to the elections.
Falana stated, “Meanwhile, INEC which has delayed the general elections by seven days is alleged to have turned round to ban political parties and their candidates from further campaigning for votes.
“With due respect, INEC has not paid attention to Section 99 of the Electoral Act which provides that the period of campaigning in public by political parties shall end 24 hours before polling day.
“Since elections have been delayed, the period of campaign has also changed and will end 24 hours to the new polling day. Therefore, the limitation of campaign imposed by INEC should be reversed without any delay.”
Falana quoted Section 26 of the Electoral Act as saying, “an election may be postponed if a serious breach of peace or violence is likely to occur or on account of natural disaster or other emergencies.” He said the postponement of the elections on account of logistical or operational reasons was unjustifiable.
He added that the APC and the PDP should share in the blame for the postponement due to their acts of imposition of candidates, which he said, led to court orders changing the candidates of parties on election eve.
INEC has legal powers to postpone any election – Umeh
However, the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial district, Chief Victor Umeh, said INEC had powers under the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act to postpone elections.
He said, “We are not happy that the elections are postponed at the wee hours of Saturday because we had prepared and mobilised the electorate only for the elections to be postponed.
“But INEC is the umpire charged by the constitution to conduct elections and the constitution and the Electoral Act give INEC the powers to postpone elections for good and verifiable reasons.”
He called for calm over the postponement.
Umeh, who described the poll delay as painful and sad, said Nigerians should bear with the commission.
Sue INEC, CASER urges Nigerians
But the Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights has urged Nigerians who suffered unduly as a result of the postponement to sue INEC.
The Executive Director, CASER, Frank Tietie, in a statement on Sunday also said whether or not INEC postponed the elections in the national interest was immaterial to any Nigerian who suffered any financial loss or experienced undue hardship because of the postponement.
He explained that the goal of such legal redress was to teach INEC a lesson.
FG forced INEC to postpone elections, says Wike
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said contrary to excuses being fed Nigerians, the Federal Government pressured the INEC chairman to postpone the elections.
Wike, who made these remarks in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday, said he was sure that Nigerians were shocked to note that despite the assurances from the commission, the elections were postponed.
The governor alleged that the Federal Government had sensed that it was going to lose the February 16, 2019 elections, adding that it allegedly ordered the commission to begin a process of staggering the elections.
This, Wike said, would be done by postponing elections in Rivers and other strategic states including Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Kwara to other dates.
INEC decision is better for Nigerians – Ondo Rep
But a member of the House of Representatives from Ondo State, Mr Bamidele Baderinwa, urged the electorate not to be discouraged by the decision of the electoral commission.
Baderinwa, who represents the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency of Ondo State, spoke with journalists on the postponement of the elections in Akure, the state capital on Sunday.
Isiaka chides INEC
However, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Ogun State, Gboyega Isiaka, described the last-minute postponement as unfortunate and most condemnable.
The governorship candidate stated this in a statement released by the Director of Media and Publicity, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka Campaign Organisation, Bolaji Adeniji.
Poll delay shows INEC can be irresponsible – Ex-Senate leader
Also, a former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, said the last-minute postponement of the elections was a sign of irresponsibility on the part of INEC.
The two-time senator said in a saner society, the unfortunate development would have forced the INEC chairman to resign without being asked to do so.
Teslim, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, stated that the hasty postponement was an international embarrassment.
INEC only postponed Buhari’s defeat date – S’East PDP
In the same vein, the South-East chapter of the PDP said that INEC only postponed the electoral doomsday of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The main opposition party in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary in the geopolitical zone, Chijioke Ekwegh, said the country was united in voting Buhari out of power.
The statement read, “That the last-minute postponement of the presidential and National Assembly polls by INEC is an indication that the APC-led Federal Government has failed woefully.
“That the last-gasp postponement is an indication that the electoral umpire is under pressure and doing the bidding of the APC just to rig the elections in favour of the unpopular President Muhammadu Buhari.”
Abia APGA accuses PDP of plans to rig elections
However, the Abia State Chapter of the All Progressive Grand Alliance has accused the PDP of plotting to rig the postponed elections.
The state chairman of APGA, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, made the accusation in a statement on Sunday in Umuahia, the state capital.
READ ALSO: INEC and the postponed polls
Ehiemere, whose address was presented by the Deputy Chairman of the party, Chima Onyekwere, said the party in the state received the postponement with shock and great disappointment.
While recounting the losses recorded as a result of the postponement of the elections, the APGA chieftain said the attention of the party was drawn to an alleged plan by the PDP to rig the postponed elections.
AU council cautions against blame game
But the African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council has cautioned politicians and stakeholders to stop the blame game caused by the postponement of the elections.
It also charged INEC to set a global standard with the February 23, 2019 polls, adding that voters must not be discouraged as a result of the one-week postponement.
The council urged Nigerians to be calm, exercise restraint and support INEC in discharging the responsibility of conducting free, fair and credible elections.
The AU-ECOSOCC disclosed this in an e-mail its Nigeria Chapter Representative, John Oba, sent to one of our correspondents in reaction to the postponement.
It said, “We have read with concern several insinuations and blame game in the media on the postponement and wish to caution that all stakeholders should exercise restraint and rather channel their efforts into assisting the commission to organise credible polls.
“We must all understand that our words at this time will go a long way to either make or break the process and endanger the peace of Nigeria and Africa at large. Stakeholders must therefore watch against comments that may hamper the process.”

DANGOTE, FIVE OTHER COMPANIES TO FUND MAJOR ROADS CONSTRUCTION IN NIGERIA
Dangote Industries Limited, along with five other major firms, is set to invest in 19 road projects in Nigeria. This is in accordance with the Executive Order 007 2019, signed by President Muhammadu Buhari last Friday.
The new order, known as “Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme”, allows private companies to construct federal roads across the country and be repaid in the form of tax credit.
Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, will chair the 13-member scheme’s management committee of various road and bridge projects under the pilot phase.
As disclosed by media aide to the minister, Paul Abechi Ella, six private sector players in the construction industry will execute the new order in the pilot phase of the scheme. Also, the 19 eligible road projects, totalling 794.4 kilometres, have been prioritized in 11 states across, each of the six geopolitical zones in the country.
Other firms investing in the pilot scheme execution include Lafarge Africa Plc; Unilever Nigeria Plc, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, Nigeria LNG Limited, and China Road and Bridge Corporation Nigeria Ltd.
The minister noted that one of her key priorities has been mobilizing investments in developing human capital and physical infrastructure, in line with the Buhari-led administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (‘ERGP’).
According to her, the Scheme will incentivize private sector investment in Nigerian roads across key economic corridors and industrial clusters, relieving the government of the burden of funding the initial outlays for these investments.
The Executive Order 007 (Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme) is based on the demand for road projects by companies and other corporate sponsors, who are willing to deploy their own working capital and financial resources to fund projects located in the major economic corridors of the country where they have significant businesses and operations.

6 Amazing Benefits of Chewing Neem Regularly
HighlightsNeem holds an immense traditional importance in the culture of IndiaNeem leaf is loaded with multiple health benefitsNeem leaf is replete with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory propertiesNeem holds an immense importance in the traditional culture of India. We have all heard our parents and grandparents re-iterate the advantages of neem time and again. The neem tree is said to have over 130 different biologically active compounds. Each part of the tree, be it the leaves, twigs, bark, seeds, root, fruits or flowers, is used in traditional Ayurvedic treatment for multiple issues ranging from inflammation, fever infection, skin disease and dental disorders. Replete with antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, antimalarial, anti-microbial and anti-viral properties, neem is a remedy for almost all your health concerns. People still sprinkle a bunch of leaves near the bed of a flu-infected patient,or hang a cluster of them over their doors in a belief that the air that crosses the neem leaf is filtered of disease causing bacteria and virus.
Neem leaf is loaded with numerous health and skin benefits. Consuming it in the form of a paste, in tea or just chewing a twig freshly plucked from the tree has reaped multiple benefits for people since time immemorial. For over two thousand years neem leaf has basked in the reputation of being magical, particularly in southeast Asia, and it is slowly gaining recognition in the West too.
Ayurveda for generations has professed the advantages of consuming neem leaves. Both bitter and pungent in taste, neem leaf, according to Ayurveda, has been especially significant in balancing our Vata or neuromuscular disorders. It further removes toxins from our blood and enhances activity of free radical scavenging. Chewing neem leaves can also nourish our hair and treat headaches.
Here is a list of benefits you can gain out of chewing a handful of these leaves -
1. Skin Benefits
In the book 'Ayurveda For All: Effective Ayurvedic Self Cure for Common and Chronic Ailments', Murli Manohar lists how consuming neem leaves can remove toxins, and purify blood to give us a clearer skin. Neem leaves have strong anti-bacterial properties which work wonders on infections, burns and any kind of skin problems. While a paste of neem leaves and turmeric can be used for treating insect bites, itching, eczema, ring worms and some mild skin diseases, chewing the leaves can also give you a nourished, purified and radiant skin. If the bitterness bothers you, mix them with honey and have or make a solution by boiling neem leaves and drink the strained water. It can also treat all your acne and dark spot problems.
2. Good for Hair Nourishing
Chewing neem leaves can prove beneficial for your hair too, with its high levels of antioxidants. Neem protects the scalp from oxidative stress caused by the free radicals. Neem leaves also stimulate healthy cell division and support hair follicle growth around your scalp region. Washing your hair with boiled neem water has been a traditional method to combat dandruff and undernourished, damaged hair. Neem leaves have antifungal properties, which work effectively against a fungi called Malassezia, which causes dandruff. Its immense healing properties has earned neem the name of scalp saviour too.
3. Good For Your Eyes
Ayurveda also points out how neem leaves can be good for the eyes. Chewing neem can improve your vision. To treat any kind of irritation, tiredness or redness you can also boil some neem leaves, let the water cool completely and then use it to wash your eyes.
4. Boosting Immune System
Rich in antimicrobial, antiviral and antioxidant properties, chewing neem leaves can prove very effective in strengthening your immune system. Murli Manohar talks about how these leaves can prevent the damage caused by free radicals, thereby bringing down the risk of many diseases ranging from common flu to cancer or heart disease. Neem leaves destroy bacteria and further stimulates the immune system.
5. Improves Digestion
Neem leaves are excellent for your liver, which automatically enhances your digestion. Apart from this, consuming neem on a daily basis also destroys excess bacteria in the intestinal region and cleanses your colon, further facilitating a smoother digestion.
6. Oral Health
As Indians we are very well versed with the idea of men and women stepping out in their balconies to brush their teeth with neem twigs. Even chewing neem leaves can bring forth multiple dental and oral benefits. Neem being antibacterial in nature fights germs and maintains the alkaline level of our saliva. It is also effective against plaque formation and gum infections. Chewing neem can also lend you a shiny set of pearly white teeth.
However. here is a word of caution: pregnant women, especially in the fourth or fifth month of their pregnancy, should not have neem. Consumption of neem produces immense internal heat, which could prove hazardous to the foetus. Even when a woman is planning to conceive she should steer clear from neem leaves, as the excess heat would begin to treat the foetus as a foreign body. This excess body heat can be brought down with adequate intake of water or a cooling drink like ash gourd juice.

Top wonders of watermelons
Watermelon is a delicious and refreshing fruit that’s also good for you. It contains only 46 calories per cup but is high in vitamin C, vitamin A and many healthy plant compounds. Here are the top 9 health benefits of eating watermelon.
1. Helps You Hydrate
Drinking water is an important way to keep your body hydrated. However, eating foods that have a high water content can also help. Interestingly, watermelon is 92% water. What’s more, a high water content is one of the reasons why fruits and vegetables help you feel full. The combination of water and fiber means you’re eating a good volume of food without a lot of calories. Watermelon has a high water content. This makes it hydrating and helps you feel full.
2. Contains Nutrients and Beneficial Plant Compounds
As far as fruits go, watermelon is one of the lowest in calories — only 46 calories per cup (154 grams). That’s lower than even low-sugar fruits such as berries. One cup (154 grams) of watermelon has many other nutrients as well, including these vitamins and minerals:
Vitamin C: 21% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI)
Vitamin A: 18% of the RDI
Potassium: 5% of the RDI
Magnesium: 4% of the RDI
Vitamins B1, B5 and B6: 3% of the RDI
Watermelon is also high in carotenoids, including beta-carotene and lycopene. Plus, it has citrulline, an important amino acid. Here’s an overview of watermelon’s most important antioxidants:
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage from free radicals.
Carotenoids
Carotenoids are a class of plant compounds that includes alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A.
Lycopene
Lycopene is a type of carotenoid that doesn’t change into vitamin A. This potent antioxidant gives a red color to plant foods such as tomatoes and watermelon and is linked to many health benefits.
Cucurbitacin E
Cucurbitacin E is a plant compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Bitter melon, a relative of watermelon, contains even more cucurbitacin E. Watermelon is a low-calorie fruit high in some nutrients, especially carotenoids, vitamin C and cucurbitacin E.
3. Contains Compounds That May Help Prevent Cancer
Researchers have studied lycopene and other individual plant compounds in watermelon for their anti-cancer effects. Though lycopene intake is associated with a lower risk of some types of cancer, study results are mixed. The strongest link so far seems to be between lycopene and cancers of the digestive system. It appears to reduce cancer risk by lowering insulin-like growth factor (IGF), a protein involved in cell division. High IGF levels are linked to cancer. In addition, cucurbitacin E has been investigated for its ability to inhibit tumor growth. Some compounds in watermelon, including cucurbitacin E and lycopene, have been studied for their potential to prevent cancer, though study results are mixed.
4. May Improve Heart Health
Heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide. Lifestyle factors, including diet, may lower your risk of heart attack and stroke by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Several nutrients in watermelon have specific benefits for heart health. Studies suggest that lycopene may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It can also help prevent oxidative damage to cholesterol. According to studies in obese, postmenopausal women and Finnish men, lycopene may also reduce the stiffness and thickness of artery walls. Watermelon also contains citrulline, an amino acid that may increase nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric oxide helps your blood vessels expand, which lowers blood pressure. Other vitamins and minerals in watermelon are also good for your heart. These include vitamins A, B6, C, magnesium and potassium. Watermelon has several heart-healthy components, including lycopene, citrulline and other vitamins and minerals.
How to boost your immunity
These foods can fight infection and strengthen your immune response.
The following story is excerpted from TIME’s special edition, 100 Most Healing Foods, which is available in stores, at the Meredith Shop and at Amazon.
Vitamin C has a reputation for being a feel-good nutrient, so it will come as no surprise that this list is full of foods with high levels of it. In the body, vitamin C behaves as an antioxidant, which means it protects cells from free-radical damage. Consuming it also helps the body better absorb iron, which is critical for normal immune-system function.
Although foods high in vitamin C won’t stop your flu symptoms, eating them regularly may help prevent illness down the line. There are other ways that foods fight infection and strengthen immune response. (Grandma wasn’t wrong about chicken soup, for example: The mixture of hydrating broth, healing herbs, fiber, protein and antioxidants makes the meal actually therapeutic.) Here are 11 of the best foods for your immune system.

Jalapeño peppers get their spice from a compound called capsaicin, which is something of an all-star in the nutrition world. Capsaicin acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and may ease arthritis symptoms. Some research suggests it can also keep your metabolism humming.
How to eat them
Add diced jalapeño peppers to guacamole for an extra kick of flavor. You can also mix these peppers into your favorite cornbread recipe.
Lemons
Why they’re good for you
Lemons are high in compounds called bio-flavonoids, which kill cancer-causing free radicals. They also provide vitamin C (you can meet half your daily requirement from one fruit), so adding lemon juice to your meals is an easy strategy for protecting yourself against colds and other infections.
How to eat them
One simple way to work in a daily dose of vitamin C is to drink lemon water, either chilled or warm. A squeeze of lemon also makes steamed veggies tastier.
Apples
Why they’re good for you
People who eat an apple a day use fewer prescription medications, according to a 2015 study. And regular apple eaters report fewer asthma symptoms, according to British research (a flavonoid called khellin may open up airways). Apples are also high in fiber, which can help reduce the inflammation common during infections. Bonus: they’re a superfood when it comes to satiety.
How to eat them
To turn apples into a more energizing snack, slice one up and enjoy with a spoonful of peanut or almond butter. Buy organic or wash well before eating: a recent study found that a little water and baking soda removes pesticide residue from the fruit.
Chicken soup
Why it’s good for you
Turns out this herbal remedy has some science behind it: chicken soup helps soothe cold symptoms, likely because the warm broth thins nasal mucus so it can clear more easily. Soup in general hydrates, making it a smart meal pick when you’re sick.
How to eat it
Simmer up your own soup and add nutrient-dense foods like carrots, onions and fresh herbs.
Garlic
Why it’s good for you
Garlic’s scent tips you off to its many health benefits. The pungent aroma comes from sulfur compounds, including allicin. Scientists believe that allicin may block enzymes involved in infections; some studies suggest that swallowing garlic may ward off colds. (It can be easiest to eat garlic cooked with other foods, although some people can stomach eating a bit like a pill, followed by milk or water.) Research has also linked garlic intake to a lower risk of stomach, colon and esophagus cancers.
How to eat it
For a flavor and immunity boost, add garlic to marinades, roasted vegetables or grain bowls.
Grapefruit
Why it’s good for you
Half a grapefruit has more than 60% of your daily vitamin C content, and eating grapefruit may also help the body absorb other essential nutrients, such as iron. People who regularly consume foods containing vitamin C may have slightly shorter colds or milder symptoms.
How to eat it
For a healthy morning treat, broil grapefruit with a little cinnamon sugar.
Ginger
Why it’s good for you
Ginger, which is sometimes recommended to treat nausea, is high in both antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. A recent review of 60 studies found that ginger might have beneficial effects on ailments like obesity, heart disease and diabetes. It also contains immune-system-supporting compounds like beta-carotene and capsaicin.
How to eat it
Toss freshly ground ginger into a tofu stir-fry or sip it in your tea.
Sage
Why it’s good for you
Sage, which can be made into tea, is an ancient remedy for sore throats, cough and colds. One Swiss study found that using sage with other herbs like echinacea can help relieve throat irritation.
How to eat it
Mix sage, goat cheese and eggs for a flavor-filled omelet. You can also add this earthy herb to bean soups and chicken, pork and beef dishes.
Chamomile tea
Why it’s good for you
Dried chamomile flowers have been used for hundreds of years, and there’s some research suggesting that the tea helps
an upset stomach. The flowers contain compounds called flavonoids that may help reduce inflammation and pain.
How to eat it
Make a healthy “hot toddy” with hot chamomile tea, honey and sliced lemon.
Fennel
Why it’s good for you
When you have a cold, a little fennel is your friend. Inside this licorice-flavored vegetable are compounds that may help loosen chest mucus and soothe a sore throat. Fennel is also a good source of potassium, essential in regulating the fluid balance in the body so you don’t get dehydrated.
How to eat it
You can roast fennel with other vegetables, or even boil, strain and drink it as a tea.
Cranberries
Why they’re good for you
Whether cranberries help prevent or treat urinary tract infections is still being debated, with recent studies suggesting they may not be able to lower the amount of bacteria in women’s urine. Still, the nutrients in these berries support immune-system health and may curb the risk of heart disease.
How to eat them
Cook cranberries and oranges or other citrus fruits on a stove top to make a jam.
