The actual structure of the Kaaba has been demolished and rebuilt several times in the course of its history. We don't really know when it was first built....nor by whom.
Before advent of Islam, the four walls of the Ka'aba (cube) were associated with the four regions of hte known world (Syria, al-Iraq, Yemen and "the West"). The major axis of the Ka'aba is aligned to the star named Canopus in the south. The minor axis is aligned towards summer sunrise and winter sunset; the furthest limits of the moon at solstices. Until about 90,000 years ago, Canopus was the brightest star in Earth's night sky. Sirius, in its orbit around the galaxy, drew closer to us and is now brighter than Canopus. Egyptians used Sirius as their celestial navigation star...were there men using the Ka'aba location 90,000 years ago to sight Canopus? We don't know. Canopus is an F-type supergiant about 310 light years from the solar system. It is the most luminous object within a radius of 700 light years. It has a diameter that is 65 times larger than the sun's and shines with 13,600 times the luminosity of our sun.
From the foregoing we gather that the Ka'aba was a pre-islamic observatory whereby solstices were derived and Canopus was observed as a primary navigation star. But why Canopus and not Sirius?
According to first generation of Prophet Muhammad's followers, while in Medina, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) prayed facing due south. 1995JHA....26..253K Page 253 Jewish and Islamic traditions agree upon Ibrahim (Abraham Aveinu) being the builder of this "altar" from which he observed the heavens. It was at the Ka'aba that Abraham left Hagar and Isma'il, with the Well of Zamzam...though both groups differ at to the nature of the abandonment.
In Islamic tradition, Ibrahim was commanded by Allah to leave his wife Hazrat Hajra (Hagar) and their infant son alone in the desert, with only basic provisions, to test their faith. The place was between Al-Safa and Al-Marwah. When their provisions were exhausted, Hazrat Hajra went in search of help or water. To make her search easier and faster, she went alone, leaving the infant Ismael on the ground. She first climbed the nearest hill, Al-Safa, to look over the surrounding area. When she saw nothing, she then went to the other hill, Al-Marwah, to look around. While Hazrat Hajra was on either hillside, she was able to see Ismael and know he was safe. However, when she was in the valley between the hills she was unable to see her son. Thus Hazrat Hajra would run while in the valley between the hills and walk at a normal pace while on the hillsides.
Hazrat Hajra travelled back and forth between the hills seven times in the scorching heat before she returned to Ismael. When she arrived, she found that a spring had sprouted forth from the crying baby kicking at the sand with his feet. This spring is now known as the Zamzam Well
But the part of the story often overlooked is that Isma'il was at Ibrahim's death bed to say good-bye to his father...things were not as antogonistic as is made out today.
The pagan gods of pre-Islamic Arabia were worshipped in the form of rectangular stones or rocks. The pagan deity 'Al-Lat', mentioned in Qur'an 53:19 , and believed by pre-Islamic pagans to be one of the 'daughters of Allah', was once venerated as a cubic rock at Ta'if in Saudi Arabia. An edifice was built over the rock to mark it apart as a house of worship. We learn of this in Kitab Al-Asnam.
The Black Stone was one among many stones and idols venerated at the Ka’aba by the pre-Islamic pagan religion. The Black Stone was kissed during pre-Islamic pagan worship. Though Prophet Muhammad threw out 360 other objects at the Ka’aba, he retained this Black Stone and continued the practice of kissing it. It is this same stone that pre-Islamic 'pagans' once kissed
In summation, we have a book that dates the Ka'aba to the time of Abraham, and a Quranic tradition that it was built by Abraham. Sometime between the time of Abraham, and Prophet Muhammad, pagan religious practices were conducted at the "altar"...practices which Prophet Muhammad terminated. But we have no physical evidence to corroborate any of this except for the Black Stone which persists from the original edifice.
